  • Case Study - Improving Patient Flow in an Emergency Department

    Background:

    In this case study, we examine how we partnered with a Healthcare system to optimize patient flow in the Emergency Department (ED) of a mid-sized hospital serving a diverse patient population. The objective of the initiative was to optimize patient throughput, reduce wait times, and improve overall operational efficiency. Through. utilization of our VALUE Business Transformation Methodology, our client achieved significant improvements in patient flow, resulting in enhanced patient experiences and measurable outcomes.

    Phase 1 - VALIDATE:

    The key objective of the Validate phase is to clearly define opportunities for improvement. During this phase, we discovered the ED faced significant challenges, including overcrowding, prolonged wait times, and inefficiencies in patient flow. These challenges led to compromised patient care and satisfaction, as well as increased resource strain on the hospital.

    Phase 2 - ANALYZE

    In the Analyze phase the team collaborated with leaders and frontline team members to further understand the current state of key processes and collect sound data on process performance. We conducted a thorough analysis and collect baseline metrics. Key metrics measured included:

    Average door-to-provider time: 75 minutes

    Average length of stay (LOS) for admitted patients: 10 hours

    Patient satisfaction scores: 65% (below industry benchmarks)

    Phase 3 - LEARN

    During the Learn phase our team used the process and performance information from the Analyze Phase to assess and analyze process data, perform root cause analysis for potential issues, and identify inefficiencies in the ED’s patient flow. The team recognized multiple opportunities for improvement.

    Phase 4 - UPDATE

    The main objective of Update phase is to design a streamlined and more efficient process. During this phase we outlined a full-scale implementation plan of our improvement solutions.

    Based on the findings during the Learn phase, we collaborated with our client’s multi-disciplined team to develop a comprehensive improvement plan that included process redesign, resource optimization, and staff training. Key innovations included
